I tried I really really tried, but it’s ridiculously challenging to maintain a healthy lifestyle during the holiday season. All the wonderful wholesome daily habits like getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly get tossed right out the window! I’d worked super hard to lose eighteen pounds just before the great beginning of the season, Turkey Day.
Feeling determined but realistic I resolved to just go ahead and enjoy the day with a few cheats like cheesy mashed potatoes and yummy pumpkin pie, but then got right back on my healthy wagon the next day. Having gained just one pound post-Christmas Day, I was feeling pretty darn invincible and proud of myself. Woo Hoo! Fast forward to January with the kids returning to school, bags packed and teary eyes at the airport I find myself a few pounds heavier and a bit tired out. What’s a girl to do? If I’ve learned one thing about losing those pounds, it’s that the best plans start with just one healthy habit to kickstart you in the right direction. For me, that one habit usually leads to feeling better and adding more healthy habits back to the mix.
I find starting with the spa water is easy and leads to adding more healthy habits, so here’s my three go to healthy habits to begin the New Year!
1. Add refreshing spa water to your day
Make the mundane a treat! I don’t know about you but how I start my day makes all the difference for me. The very first thing I do is get up and make a large pitcher of spa water. Guzzling water all day long is not my favorite thing to do, and I find that making it tasty and delicious keeps me hydrating consistently throughout the day. Slice some cukes, grapefruit, lemon and then add some mint for flavor, and you’re good to go!
2. Plan your meals
Most household managers in chief do some degree of meal planning. If you look, you’ll find there are a wealth of new fitness meal bloggers out there that will blow the lid off your diet stumbling blocks. Whether you’re vegan, paleo, vegetarian, or ketogenic gorgeous bento boxes are sure to inspire eating a healthy diet. I’m adding some major #mealprep and ordering up some #bentoboxes to achieve my New Year’s resolutions. I started my search after doing Kayla Itsines #BBG workout which led to finding some fantastic exercise and meal prep inspiration. Though she’s a lot younger than moi, I’m completely blown away and inspired by the amazing Instagram of @nessasphere.
3. Exercise every day
Even it’s only ten minutes I’ve found that getting in anything is WAY better than getting in nothing. Last year I did a personal training program that worked wonders for me. I’d lost ten pounds but then my circumstances changed, and I decided to work out at home for a while. I’m guilty of putting other things first, like starting a project and convincing myself it’s exercise (Not). At the end of the day, it’s all about priorities, and I’m finally learning that exercise is like brushing your teeth, it’s just something you gotta do! I also thought I was too far gone and at over fifty I should just be satisfied and at peace with my body, Not! My initial goals of getting thinner have now morphed into getting stronger and building more muscle. Heck, who knows I may even get a six pack!
