I’m super delighted and crazy about this great little princess chest.  The milk paint chipped and crackled with random perfection.

The curvy front and warm wood showing through are so pretty.

 MMMM, mmm, yummm

I love rustic pieces that go with old and new, glam or simple.  The addition of one interesting piece can really make a room and give it that extra little touch of personality and charm.

It seems the older I get the more I desire a relaxed, natural, rustic  environment.  Simple is where it’s at for me lately.  Simple, as in the sound the fire makes when it’s crackling in front of me, simple as in the rustling of the trees when I’m walking along, simple as in the feel of the pages of a very good book between my fingers.

I guess I just don’t need much these days.

I like this description of how snowflakes form – As an ice crystal drops through the cloud it bumps and knocks others and becomes a snowflake.  This process of bumping others, along with a little melting and re-freezing aids the creation of their complex design.  Hmmm, kinda like life.

Well, that’s what I’ve been up to lately – bumping along and hammering, sawing, painting, staining….making.

For the snowflake I followed the wonderful instructions from My Altered State

I also made a little flock, or is it a herd, of reindeer.  Hmmm, they do fly so I guess either works.

bench with cushion

The little bench got it’s cushion and found a new home!

The booth got a  little holiday sprucing.

And I started a FUN retail window display project.  The base is a burlap backdrop with a mantel made from a wood pallet.

I plan to add some portrait silhouettes above the mantel, some greens and lights in the wood bin, and some baubles and a companion for Mr. Kitty to play with.

It should look something like this when all the decorations are added.

You can’t tell me furniture doesn’t have a soul, well vintage and handmade furniture anyway…

I like to think the person who carved this chair put a little bit of magic into its creation.  Just imagine the labor of love required to make a carving like this.

It’s a beautiful thing that you just can’t find in factory made furniture.  In fact pieces like this are getting harder and harder to find and you don’t stumble upon them every day.Autumn Woods Salad Bowl

My cousin makes handcrafted turned wood bowls and I can tell you he puts his heart and soul into every turn.

I really love a cozy eclectic look with a statement piece like this chair sprinkled in here and there.  These wood beauties, the bowl and the chair, would be quite happy in a room like this.

Perhaps pull our chair up and take a seat next to these guys.

Warning – Nerd Alert!  It’s a Lord of the Rings chair for Arwen daughter of Elrond.  I suspect she might enjoy an elvish drink in front of the fire in this chair.  We are definitely a Lord of the Rings Family (though my son wishes to be excluded from this statement).  It’s a movie that’s always good for a lazy, rainy Sunday watch.

In fact when I’m feeling low I play this little speech.  I love it when Aragorn says….I see in your eyes the same fear that would take the heart of me!  …a day may come  when we forsake our friends and break all bonds of fellowship, (HA-take that!) but it is not this day

…by all that you hold dear on this good earth I bid you stand Men of the West!  Phew and HA – ok I’m done…

I’d style it with crusty loaves of bread and a warm cozy fire.

caned bench

It’s seating week in the workshop.  Another cute little easy, no fuss bench with linen cushion, welt, and zipper for dry cleaning or gentle washing.

This mid-century vintage caned bench is so neutral and will work with any pillow combo you can throw at it.

Lightly distressed with a good old down home cozy feel.   I love finding a nice vintage piece like this with caning intact.  This little bench will go with just about any decor.  You can spruce it up with snappy pillows.

These Madeline Weinrib beauties would take this bench from natural and understated, to swanky and fun.

I love a little bench like this because it’s so diminutive and can scoot in just about anywhere.  It would be really cute around a table or even at the foot of the bed.

 Nicely rustic, aged, and neutral.

I decided to try the wood lath technique Jim uses on his tables at Yellow Finch Antiques.   Jim used old lath from a house in Brooklyn but I decided to just grab a stack at Lowes.

The old lath is a little thicker and just plain great.  They just do’t make things the way they used to!

I was surprised how long it took to cut, glue, nail and piece it all together.  A good two hours I’d say.

Then I had to upholster the back with linen and double welt.  There’s lots of steps to finishing it off – cut, sew, staple, staple, staple.

The edges near the lath were trimmed out a bit to blend it all together.  I decided to leave all the old wonderful craggy nail holes and rustic bumps.   Love the little wood curved trim around the arm.

Isn’t it charming, rustic and elegant at the same time?

I think I’ll make a long skinny linen pillow with buttons or brass tie rings.

The details and curves around the back and the arms really make this one special.
